A LITTLE HISTORY

Tirana became Albania's capital in 1920. Around Skanderbeg Square, Ottoman landmarks sit beside the broad boulevards of the twentieth century and the towers going up today. The Pyramid, built as a museum for Enver Hoxha, has since been remade as a space for learning and public life.

ESSENTIALS

BANKS
The currency is the Albanian lek (ALL). Check the amount in lek before paying: people sometimes still quote prices in 'old lek', ten times the value printed on the notes. Keep some cash for small purchases.
GETTING AROUND
Start on foot around Skanderbeg Square and the central boulevard. City buses cover longer trips. The airport bus connects Tirana International Airport (TIA) with the stop behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet, with hourly departures around the clock. Check the airport's current timetable before travelling.
FOOD & DRINK
Try fërgesë, Tirana's baked pepper, tomato and cheese dish. Blloku is a useful starting point for an evening of cafés and bars; Pazari i Ri puts the market at the centre of a daytime wander.
MUST TRY
Walk from Skanderbeg Square to the Pyramid, then head south to the Grand Park and its artificial lake. For the country's recent history, visit House of Leaves or one of the Bunk'Art museums.
