A LITTLE HISTORY

Tbilisi grew around the hot springs beside the Mtkvari River. Its old streets and courtyards hold traces of the traders and empires that passed through the city. Start in Abanotubani, the bath district, then walk into the lanes of the old town.

ESSENTIALS

BANKS
The currency is the Georgian lari (GEL). Cards are widely used, but carry some cash for markets and smaller businesses. Check the currency and any fees before confirming an ATM withdrawal.
GETTING AROUND
Use the metro and municipal buses for longer trips, then explore the old town on foot. Airport bus 337 connects Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) with the city. Check its current operating hours before a late arrival. The old town has steep streets, so allow extra time for hills.
FOOD & DRINK
Start with khinkali dumplings and khachapuri, the cheese-filled bread. Pkhali, made with vegetables and walnuts, is another good dish to look for. Wine bars are a way into Georgia's reds, whites and amber wines.
MUST TRY
Walk through the old town and Sololaki, spend an hour in the sulfur-bath district of Abanotubani, and cross the river to Rike Park. Book a bath directly with the bathhouse if you want a private room.
