A LITTLE HISTORY

Ancient columns of the Agora in İzmir at dusk

Known as Smyrna for most of its life, the city has been a port for roughly five thousand years and changed hands between Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. Its modern shape dates from the 1920s, when the great fire and the population exchange rebuilt the waterfront along what is now the Kordon. The bazaar district, Kemeraltı, survived and is still the commercial heart.

ESSENTIALS

BANKS
Everything is priced in lira. ATMs (called bankamatik) are everywhere and most take foreign cards; Ziraat, Garanti and İş Bankası are the most reliable. Cards work in most places, but carry cash for markets, dolmuş and small tea houses.
GETTING AROUND
İzmir has a metro, a tram along the Kordon, a suburban rail (İZBAN) to the airport and beyond, and ferries across the bay. Pick up an İzmirim Kart from any kiosk and top it up; it covers all of them. Dolmuş minibuses fill the gaps, cash only.
FOOD & DRINK
Kumru (a sesame sandwich with cheese and sucuk) is the local fast food, best eaten on the ferry. Boyoz and a glass of tea is breakfast. The seafood meyhanes along the Kordon and in Alsancak are the evening standard.
MUST TRY
Ride the ferry from Konak to Karşıyaka at sunset, walk the Kemeraltı bazaar on a weekday morning, and eat boyoz in the morning like locals do.
